Where am I?

Writer's picture: HelenHelen

St Vedast Alias Foster church is tucked away around the corner from St Paul's Cathedral and has a secret courtyard hidden behind a bright blue door! The courtyard is beautiful, calm and secluded, yet is full of quirky historic content. Take a closer look and see a bit of Roman pavement, to the left is a tablet with cunieform writing from 9C BC Iraq given to Canon Mortlock (rector in the mid 20C) by author Agatha Christie and her husband Max Mallowan, the eminent archaeologist. A Jacob Epstein sculpture of the Canon graces the wall at one side of the courtyard. The church was partially destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666 and again in 1940-41 during the Blitz and the updates in the 1950s were overseen by the Canon and Poet Laureate/conservation champion John Betjeman! Do visit this special place just off Foster Lane and take a moment to savour the peace and quiet!
