Society Style
See a new exhibition at the Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace from April 21st to October 8th 2023. Style and Society: Dressing the Georgians explores the revolutionary life and style of the "Glamorous Georgians", It features the practical dresses of the working classes to the sumptuous clothing worn by royal courtiers. Magnificent art by Gainsborough, Zoffany and Hogarth, together with glittering jewels, stunning gowns and accessories provide a window into this revolutionary period. Georgian fashions tell the story of rapidly changing times in terms of trade, travel and technological innovation.
This chimes with my Hogarth talk on "Vice, Welfare and Satire"which examines the daily life of Georgian Londoners through his art. He's best known for depictions of street folk and his gorgeous, colourful paintings are often forgotten.
