Hogarthian London

Artist William Hogarth provides a unique perspective of Georgian London; his early life shaped his work spurring him to produce some fabulous and challenging art. He helped set up the Foundling Hospital, sowed the seeds for the Royal Academy in St Martin's Lane and influenced legislation around copyright and gin! We'll visit several of Hogarth’s dynamic and chaotic city scenes where we can immerse ourselves in Georgian London. See the slums where the gin craze raged and the site of the Covent Garden coffee house where sin and vice thrived.
London was Hogarth’s stage; he interweaves real people and places into his prints and we'll step into his art to "tell the fascinating tale" of Georgian London’s dark underbelly!". We'll discover his friendships, philanthropy and charitable work as well as his struggle with the "establishment" to have his work recognised as high art.
